A Melbourne audiologist is calling on the hearing care sector to help breathe new life into unused hearing aids and improve access to hearing care for refugees and people seeking asylum.
Seray Lim, founder of independent clinic Arches Audiology, is the project and clinical lead for the Recycled Sound Reimagined Hearing Aid Bank, now run by the Rotary Club of Springvale City in partnership with Arches Audiology.
The initiative collects quality donated hearing aids, assesses and catalogues them, and fits them to people who have no other pathway to hearing assistance.
“Our first priority group is refugees and people seeking asylum, because they sit outside almost every funded hearing pathway currently available,” Lim said.
How you can help
The initiative is seeking support from audiologists and the wider hearing care industry.
“If you have any excess consumables such as unwanted receivers, domes or wax filters, please let us know,” Lim said.
“If you would consider fitting a small number of participants a year under agreed protocols and defined service limits, we would like to talk to you.”
The project is also seeking audiologists willing to volunteer their skills, referrals from clinicians working with refugee and asylum seeker clients, and sponsorships and donations.
The project began after the Rotary Club of Toorak approached the Rotary Club of Springvale City in 2024 about taking over the hearing aid bank.
